Mapping Changes in Temperature Normals

(2010 vs 2020)

Climate normals are averages calculated over a 30 year period. The US National Weather Service and NOAA track climate normals by hour at airports around the country for variables such as temperature, humidity, wind intensity and direction, and more. Every 10 years, the NWS releases an updated set of climate normals spanning the previous 30 years. So in 2021, the latest normals were released showing average temperature for the period starting in 1991 and ending in 2020. The map on this page shows temperature normals from 2010 (spanning 1981-2010) and 2020 (spanning 1991-2020) as a daily average or by hour.

This map is listed on my Skill Development Projects page where you can read more!

How to use this map:

  1. Use the buttons in the top right to switch between the 2010 and 2020 datasets and between daily and hourly averages.
  2. When working with hourly averages, use the slide bar in the legend on the left to choose an hour of the day to examine.
  3. Select a station to see a chart of temperature for each hour of the day for every day of the year using both the 2010 and 2020 datasets as well as the difference between the two.
(Please note the graphs may take up to 3 or 4 minutes to load - I'm working on decreasing the server response time!)
